How the Sun Damages Your Hair

Most people remember to protect their skin from the sun, but hair needs protection too. UV rays break down the protein structure of hair (keratin), leading to dryness, brittleness, color fading, and split ends.

Unlike skin, hair cannot repair itself once damaged by UV exposure. The sun’s rays penetrate the hair cuticle and degrade the natural pigments, which is why color-treated hair fades faster in summer.

Prolonged sun exposure also depletes your hair’s natural oils (sebum), leaving it dry, rough, and prone to tangling. This is especially true for lighter hair colors and fine hair textures.

Managing Humidity and Frizz

Humidity is the arch-nemesis of smooth hair. When humidity levels rise, hair absorbs moisture from the air, causing the cuticle to swell and lift. This creates frizz, especially for those with naturally wavy or curly hair.

Use ionic tools. The TYMO Airhype hair dryer generates 200 million negative ions that seal the cuticle and repel humidity, keeping hair smooth even in moist conditions.

Anti-humidity products. Use a humidity-resistant hairspray or anti-frizz serum before stepping outside. Lightweight oils like argan oil create a protective barrier.

Chlorine and Salt Water Protection

Pool chlorine and ocean salt water are two of the most damaging elements for summer hair:

Before swimming: Wet your hair with clean water and apply a leave-in conditioner or hair oil. This saturates the hair with good moisture so it absorbs less chlorine or salt water.

After swimming: Rinse your hair immediately with fresh water. Use a clarifying shampoo once a week to remove mineral buildup.

Deep condition: Follow up with a deep conditioning mask to restore moisture and repair any damage.

Your Summer Hair Care Routine

Adjust your routine for the summer months:

  • Wash less frequently — 2–3 times per week to preserve natural oils
  • Use a UV protectant spray before sun exposure, just like sunscreen for your skin
  • Deep condition weekly with a hydrating mask
  • Air dry when possible — but don’t stay wet too long (see our hair dryer vs air dry guide)
  • Wear a hat during peak sun hours (10 AM – 4 PM)

Nutrition for Summer Hair Health

Healthy hair starts from within. In summer, pay extra attention to:

Hydration: Drink plenty of water. Dehydrated hair is more prone to breakage and dryness.

Protein: Include lean proteins like chicken, fish, eggs, and legumes to support keratin production.

Omega-3s: Found in salmon, walnuts, and flaxseeds, these healthy fats nourish the scalp and promote shine.

Vitamin E: Avocados, nuts, and seeds provide antioxidants that protect hair from UV damage.

Keep your hair healthy all summer long.
